Andrew Oldcorn keeps himself on track in Colorado

ANDREW Oldcorn was lying just outside the top ten going into the final round of the 71st Senior PGA Championship in Colorado.

Playing in his first major on the seniors' circuit, the Edinburgh player jumped up to a tie for 13th on the leaderboard after a third-round 67, five-under-par, for 215.

Level-par at the start of the day, Oldcorn had six birdies and an eagle, with a bogey and double-bogey making it an adventurous round for the former PGA champion.

He was on course for a decent pay-day and still had a chance of winning, with the two joint-leaders, former Open champion Tom Lehman and fellow American Jay Don Blake, just five shots ahead of him.

Blake, who gave up fishing, boating and drag racing to concentrate on the Champions Tour when he celebrated his 50th birthday 18 months ago, shot a two-under-par 70 to take a share of the lead with Lehman who carded a 71 through swirling winds that add to the adversity facing golfers at the Colorado Golf Club course co-designed by Ben Crenshaw, a 7,450-foot monster.

Fred Couples, who led going into the weekend, faltered with a score of 75 but was still just two shots off the pace, along with Mark O'Meara (67) and Mike Goodes (70).

Sam Torrance, the only other Scot to make the cut, started his final round eight shots behind Oldcorn after a 73 on Saturday.
