Amateurs rally to avoid wooden spoon

Scotland's amateurs finished their Home Internationals campaign with a flourish at Ashburnham in Wales last night.

Scott Knowles' side, who were facing the prospect of picking up the wooden spoon after successive 8-7 defeats to England and Wales, closed with a commanding 10-5 victory over Ireland to move off the bottom of the table and claim the runners-up spot on points difference.

England, the current European Team champions, romped to a second successive Home Internationals crown with an 11-4 defeat of Wales to complete a dominant week.

The hosts finished third while Ireland slipped into the wooden spoon position.
