Amateur golf: Eilidh Briggs bids to leave junior ranks on high

EILIDH Briggs, of Kilmacolm, won the Scottish Girls' Championship and finished runner-up in this season's Scottish Amateur Championship, and the perfect swan-song to her junior career would be to lead Scotland to victory at the Girls' Home Internationals starting today at Gullane No 2.

The 18-year-old is one of five players who have retained their places from the side that finished second to England at Bangor in Northern Ireland last year, and the list includes Gullane member Lesley Atkins, Alyson McKechin of Elderslie, Ailsa Summers of Carnoustie and Grantown-On-Spey's Hannah McCook, who also played in the team that beat Ireland and Wales a year ago.

North Berwick's Clara Young, who played for the Great Britain and Ireland Under-16 team in the Junior Vagliano Trophy match in Wales in June, is one of the three newcomers. Gemma Dryburgh of Beaconsfield, beaten finalist at the Scottish Girls' at Glenisla, and Lauren Whyte of St Regulus also make their debuts.

Scotland, who will be captained by Karen Marshall this week, will take on Ireland today, England tomorrow and the final match is against Wales on Friday.
