Alister McRae on course for first Proton victory

ALISTER McRae finished the Malaysian Rally in the lead yesterday and is only stages away from his first win with new team, Proton.

The Lanark-born 40-year-old took the team to its first ever podium place at the Rally of Scotland in November.

Now he is on course to go one better after taking the lead on stage six of the Asia Pacific event yesterday afternoon and staying there.

India's Gaurav Gill had been the early leader but he suffered brake problems and a slip off the road.

"It was a good first day and the car went well. Hopefully we can finish the job now," said McRae.
