Aiden McGeady's late strike sees off Basel

Former Celtic star Aiden McGeady confirmed Spartak Moscow's place in the last 16 with a last-minute goal to earn a 1-1 draw and a 4-3 aggregate win at home to Swiss side Basel.

Scott Chipperfield had given the visitors a 15th-minute lead but Basle's desperate search for a second to avoid an exit via the away-goals rule came to nothing and McGeady ended their hopes.

Roman Shirokov's late strike capped a dramatic comeback by Zenit St Petersburg as the 2008 Uefa Cup winners hit back from a 3-1 aggregate deficit to defeat Young Boys. Taking a 2-1 first leg advantage to Russia, the Swiss side went ahead through Ammar Jemal after 21 minutes.

But shortly before the break Danko Lazovic equalised on the night and Zenit were level on aggregate in the 52nd minute when Sergei Semak fired home. Shirokov's left-footed winner came 13 minutes from time.

Michael Ballack scored as Bayer Leverkusen completed a 6-0 aggregate rout of Metalist Kharkiv with a 2-0 win in Germany, while Villarreal came from behind to eliminate Napoli 2-1 in Spain after the first leg ended goalless.

Marek Hamsik put the Italians ahead after 17 minutes but two in two minutes from Nilmar and Giuseppe Rossi just before the break won it for the home side.
