50 countries represented in East Lothian field

FIVE courses in East Lothian will be awash with young golfers today as the latest staging of the US Kids Golf European Championship swings into action.

Among those taking part – the event is split into age groups at Gullane No 2, Gullane No 3, Craigielaw, Luffness New and Longniddry – are Donadella Masson, a six-year-old from America, and five-year-old Tadeas Mack from the Czech Republic.

The 550-strong line-up featuring players from 50 countries also includes Herman Loubser, a three-handicapper from the Isle of Man youngster who won the age 12 group last year and is age 13 category this time.

Likewise, Surrey’s Martha Lewis, who won the girls’ age 11 section, is back to play in the age 12 category off her 10 handicap.

“Since our inaugural event in 2008, the European Championship has continued to grow in strength and is a main highlight of the junior golf calendar,” said Dan Van Horn, president and founder of US Kids Golf. “I am sure that many of these youngsters will go on to become at the very least competent golfers, but possibly even the Rory McIlroys of tomorrow.”

Tournament co-ordinator Alasdair Good, the Gullane head professional, added : “This year is the biggest field of competitors we have ever had. What’s more, to have kids coming from 50-plus countries has never happened before in junior golf.

“That reflects how the tournament is now recognised more than ever as the top event for junior golfers wanting to compete against the best in the world.”
