Wrath of the Lich King

Anyone with even a bit of knowledge about World of Warcraft could tell you this should be the first in the list.

Released on November 13, 2008. This expansion brought back a fan favourite character from Warcraft 3, Arthas Menethil who was now the ruler of an undead army and many fans still feel to this day that this is World of Warcraft’s best villain.

A lot of people also appreciated the more tight feeling and well-integrated story that was both cinematic in feel and adrenaline inducing in gameplay.

This expansion also brought a new continent, “Northrend” that, together with its fantastic soundtrack, made for one of this MMOs most atmospheric regions.

New class: Death knights

This expansion brought a new class of veteran players that thought they had seen it all. The first class to come out after release, many thought this was an overpowered yet satisfying class to play.

With the choice to either tank or DPS, depending on their specialization, Death knights would force powerful enemies to focus on them instead of weaker teammates.

Raids

Wrath of the Lich King introduced 10 and 25 people raids. They offer a more streamlined experience with less reliance on having a large, perfectly balanced group. Still providing a challenge while also making it easier for beginners.

Burning crusade

Released on January 16, 2007, this was the very first World of Warcraft expansion.

Introducing a new region, the outlands, a part of another world, the original orc home world, with very different geometry and colours, making it all feel very fresh.

It also brought with it two new playable races, the Blood Elves and the Draenei. This expansion also introduced flaying mounts, changing how the game is explored forever.

It’s safe to say that there’s not as much to say about this expansion in comparison to the others.

But you have to understand this was the very first one. Set the standard for things to come and is even beloved to this day thanks to the great old school feeling and balanced difficulty of the content itself. As well as a great PvP system!

Legion

Released on August 30, 2016, this is the 7th expansion in World of Warcraft and is often compared to Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King in terms of quality.

So you know this means that Blizzard has not lost its touch with their fans.

Bringing two new locations to explore, the broken isles, which serve as these expansions’ new region, and Argus, which you invade with other players during this expansion’s thrilling story.

The burning legion is back, and to fight it, you acquire the help of familiar characters to battle one of the fiercest antagonists of this MMO’s history.

Besides that, it’s no wonder this is one of the game’s most loved expansions as it brings with it artifact weapons and class halls.

Artifact weapons were customisable gear that would tie in to your specific class’ lore. They are unique and very powerful.

Class halls were community hubs tied to each of the game’s classes where you could start missions, see the lore of your class and more.

Another cool thing this expansion added was the world quests, which were a better version of daily quests. These were more engaging and held better rewards once completed.

Demon Hunter

Despite not having any new races, this expansion brought a new class to play, the Demon Hunter.

This class has two specialisations, a DPS and a tank one. Their high damage and fun mobility makes them very popular among players, as they’re the only ones with a double jump and a glide.

Even in their tank specialisation they don’t have as much health as some other tanks so you have to make up for it with your movement abilities.

Mythic+ dungeons

This expansion brought a new change to how players can interact with dungeons. By using mystic keys, they could make dungeons even more difficult but, in turn, make the rewards even better. This was a great feature that kept these dungeons feeling fresh!

This expansion is beloved because it sets off to make you, the player, feel powerful and important within the world.

Coupled together to changes to raids and concluding a thrilling story that had been building since Warcraft 3 makes this expansion one of the best ones that Wow has ever made.

World of Warcraft expansions at their worst fell kind of flat and underwhelming - at their best, they were game changers that, coupled with great cinematic moments’ emotional heights, they could bring an end to a long story that felt fulfilling.
