World class trumpeter joins the Scottish Chamber Orchestra for a madcap evening of contemporary music
Ad Absurdum will feature flamboyant music to raise a laugh in Edinburgh and Glasgow, on 30 and 31 January respectively.
Sergei Nakariakov is a world-renowned musician, but even he is put through his paces by the thrilling titular trumpet concerto of Jörg Widmann.
The same composer plays affectionate games with Beethoven in his zany Con Brio, while American minimalist John Adams reimagines classic cartoon scores in his eccentric Chamber Concerto.
In contrast, the trad-inspired romantic liaison of Sir James MacMillan’s opening Tryst, premiered by the SCO in 1989, will prove an intimate opener to proceedings.
Local DJ Jamie Pettinger will be on the decks in the foyer providing entertainment at doors, during the interval, and after the performance (when the bars will stay open).
New Dimensions is a new strand from the SCO, dedicated to stretching musical imaginations and exploring new sonic ideas.
Ad Absurdum starts at 7.30pm and takes place at The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh on 30 January, and City Halls, Glasgow on 31 January.
Ad Absurdum is sponsored by Pulsant and in association with The Skinny.
