ScottishPower backs lung cancer research centre with up to £4million funding for Cancer Research UK

At ScottishPower, all our energy goes towards building a better future. Over the last 12 years we’ve raised a staggering £40million for Cancer Research UK, and today we’re going even further, committing up to £4million for its Lung Cancer Centre of Excellence (LCCE).
We won’t stop there. Over the next five years we plan to raise £10million to support the charity’s life-saving research, including that vital support for the LCCE’s internationally renowned lung cancer researchers.

We’re supporting the Scottish Cancer Conference at the EICC in Edinburgh, which has the theme of ‘unlocking the power of health innovation’. The high-profile event brings together world-leading clinicians, academics, policy makers, charities and pharmaceutical companies alongside people directly affected by cancer.
Andrew Ward, CEO of Customer Business, ScottishPowerThe reality is that nearly 1 in 2 of us will get cancer in our lifetime*, but Cancer Research UK has been at the heart of progress that has already seen cancer survival in the UK double in the last 50 years. Now the charity wants to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 people surviving their cancer by 2034.
The conference will explore how innovation could transform cancer outcomes by preventing more cancers, diagnosing more cancers at an earlier stage, and providing access to kinder and better treatments.
We started our journey with Cancer Research UK in 2012 with a goal to raise £5million in three years but since then our incredible employees, suppliers and customers have raised £40million – it’s nothing short of phenomenal. From fundraising events to Race for Life, Stand Up To Cancer and our Help Beat Cancer energy tariff, every penny has contributed towards Cancer Research UK's vision to create a world where people live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

As a renewable energy company, the decision to direct up to £4million funding directly to the LCCE was a simple one. It was led by the desire to delve deeper into the research of one of the hardest types of cancer to treat and is a continuation of our support for Cancer Research UK’s efforts to tackle lung cancer.
Since COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, we’ve covered the cost of Cancer Research UK’s TOPICAL study to understand the link between air pollution and the development of lung cancer. Our support has already helped researchers explain the link between lung cancer and non-smoking-related factors. But we want to do more. We’re also passionate about sharing Cancer Research UK’s valuable health messaging with our customers and employees, enabling them to take positive action through understanding how making healthy changes can reduce their risk of cancer.
Andrew Ward, CEO of Customer Business, ScottishPowerSince our partnership began in 2012, it’s incredible to see the progress that has been made in cancer research. Remarkable personalised therapies are beginning to shape the treatment landscape, and almost 90% of cervical cancers in the UK are expected to be prevented thanks to the HPV vaccination programme.
As we look towards the future, we’re determined to have raised a total of £50million by 2029 to support the pioneering work of 4,000 incredible scientists, researchers, doctors and nurses working day and night across the UK.
Lung cancer is one of the UK’s biggest killers and so it’s incredibly important to me that the money we raise will go to where it’s really needed – helping with research to ultimately help more people live longer better lives, free from the fear of cancer. Together, we have the energy to help beat cancer.
