Do you fancy learning to cook with imaginative ingredients and creative flair, but can’t find the time for a course? This Edinburgh chef can deliver lessons straight to your phone with real-time video lessons.

Can’t cook, won’t cook? Make 2025 the year you transform your kitchen and your diet, with delicious home cooked meals, inspired by international chef Ru Herd.

Rujira (Ru) has a background in hospitality (including working for the Waldorf Astoria and the Hilton chain) and has run her Krua Thai Cookery School, based in Edinburgh, training hundreds of professionals and keen amateurs. She is also a food consultant for a number of international firms, and has trained chefs who work on executive superyachts and the most exclusive restaurants in the world, as well as those creating dishes found in supermarkets throughout the world.

But now she’s taking the cooking straight to your home, via Whatsapp video calls.

Her latest innovation will transform reluctant home cooks into confident meal makers who dare to be different. From choosing the right ingredients to reflect the flavours you love, to expanding your cooking repertoire, your meal makeover starts now.

She said: “The reason people don’t enjoy cooking is because they don’t know what type of ingredients should be used.”

And with her interactive classes, you’ll not only have an ingredients list to work from, but Ru’s own guiding hand talking you through each step, and learning the tricks of the trade.

“People will learn how to cook like a pro. For example, each brand of soya sauce has different flavours. Not all soya sauces are the same. There are many brands with different flavours of oyster, fish sauce, shrimp paste, light, medium, dark soya sauces. You will learn about which ones the professional chefs use and when, and once you know the ingredients, the brands, know the blending techniques. You will enjoy cooking for good.”

How it works

If you’ve got a kitchen, a mobile phone and Whatsapp, you are good to go. Ru has her phone set up on a tripod to allow her customers to be able to follow her journey round the kitchen.

She supplies a video of each task you need to do with the recipe and notes in advance, plus dry ingredients and the client supplies perishables – like chicken, seafood or fish – and they agree a time to suit for the class.

Then simply join the call at the agreed time with your apron on and your pots and pans at the ready, and get set to cook!

About Ru

Ru is a fully qualified Thai chef with a degree and other qualifications. Why not try yourself to see how she puts theory into practice to maximise clients benefits in the most effective and productive way of learning.

As well as her huge career in training, Ru has worked in some of the biggest hotels in Scotland, and most recently taught the Chez Roux team of chefs The Cromlix Hotel, owned by Sir Andy Murray. She has also worked for Albert Roux.

She has a passion for success, an eye for detail and an impressive work ethic, which this year saw her cooking for underprivileged people at Christmas.

She runs in-person training throughout the year, and August is particularly busy as she holds cookery classes during the Fringe (event venue 376 Thai cookery workshop - Krua Thai Cookery School).

She said: “My Whatsapp classes are informal and stress-free, it’s a lovely way to learn. You will not only learn to cook the dish, but I will teach the secrets of great tasting food, which flavours will blend together perfectly, and how to make healthier choices in ingredients and cooking methods.

“You will be most surprised with what you have achieved in just one lesson. Once you have paid for it’s my job to make you achieve success.”

She can also help with specialist requirements, for example if people want to cook to suit medical or dietary needs.

Feedback

It’s proving a recipe for success for clients. One said: “Thank you for the class yesterday. I made a second batch in the afternoon which has gone down a storm today. I still have the tamarind, also the radish. All other ingredients are gone but I’m going to try and buy them again to make it soon. Thanks.”
