One child needs a fostering family every 15 minutes – could you step in to help?

A shortage of foster carers across Scotland is leaving hundreds of children without a safe and stable home.  If you’ve got space in your home and heart to welcome a foster child in, whether it’s for a short or a long stay, then we’re here to support you, every step of the way.  Barnardo’s have been working to change childhoods and change lives for over 150 years.

One child in the UK needs a fostering family every 15 minutes, according to the latest figures from the Fostering Network.

And according to the country’s leading children’s charity, Barnardo’s, this equates to a genuine crisis.

Martin Crewe, director of Barnardo’s said: “At Barnardo’s we know the difference being part of a safe and loving family can make to a child’s happiness and future. We are in urgent need of more foster carers across Scotland and would love for you to spread the word for us! If you are interested or know family members/friends who would like to chat to us more about fostering and the support we can offer, then we’d love to talk more.”

When you change a childhood, you change a life. Imagine the difference you could make when you welcome a child into your home and let them know they can feel like they belong.  What's most important is that you are caring, patient, understanding and can offer the children and young people in your care a positive and loving environment.

He added: “Without being dramatic, it is fair to say that fostering in Scotland is in crisis as the numbers of those registered to foster continues to fall year on year. A shortage of foster carers leaves hundreds of children without a safe and loving home, and that is something we are keen to address.”

There’s a strong financial package available to foster carers of up to £495 per child per week; this may help people put off the idea of fostering because of the cost of living.

Our carers come from a variety of backgrounds and have all sorts of life experiences, skills and qualities which helps meet the different needs of children and young people needing a foster home.

You’ll get the support from dedicated social workers who have a wealth of experience and knowledge. They’ll use it to make sure you, and the children in your care, all get the support you need.

Martin added: “Foster belonging with us and help change a childhood. You can call us on 0800 0277 280 or find out more on Barnardo’s website at www.barnardos.org.uk/foster.
