The quality of Annandale Distillery’s blended Storyman whisky, inspired by Scottish screen actor James Cosmo, tells its own tale, writes Rory Ford.

We all have stories – what’s yours? Stories are made to be shared and – as any proud Scotsman will tell you – they’re best shared over a dram or two.

In the storied realm of Scotch whisky, where heritage and craftsmanship intertwine, Storyman whisky is a premium blend created by the renowned Annandale Distillery and inspired by the redoubtable Scottish actor James Cosmo.

From such a remarkable collaboration you would reasonably expect a remarkable whisky – and you would be correct – but this dram aspires to be something more. With Storyman, Cosmo and Annandale aimed to create “a captivating narrative in a bottle”. With over 70 per cent of its composition derived from Annandale single malts, the whisky boasts a depth of character and flavour that is quite extraordinary. Each sip is a journey through the rugged landscapes of Scotland, a testament to the passion of the artisans who have poured their hearts into its creation.

Dream come true

This is clearly a passion project for Cosmo, he has said: “It’s always been a dream of mine to create my own whisky.” For years it seems as though it would remain a dream but during the production of the 2018 film Outlaw King with Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, Cosmo became aware of the Annandale Distillery – “steeped in history and located in the heart of Bruce’s land”.

First established in 1830, the Dumfries and Galloway distillery had lain dormant after a 100-year hiatus. The original building had been used for farming in the meantime and was consequently quite well-preserved when it was bought in 2007 by Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church, who began an extensive £17.5 million restoration project to revive it.

When Cosmo visited the distillery, the Game of Thrones star became “intrigued by their use of twin copper stills which add real depth and character to the whisky they produce, even from a young age”.

The allure of Storyman lies not only in its rich heritage, but also in its exceptional taste profile. The blend expertly marries the robust, peaty notes of Annandale’s single malts with the subtle sweetness of carefully selected grain whiskies. The result is a harmonious symphony of flavours that dance on the palate, leaving a lingering warmth and a desire for more.

More than just a glass

Cosmo is elegant when describing his love for a dram: “I love the tradition and the craftsmanship – mostly I love the way whisky brings people together. There’s always a point in the night when the pace slows down and the conversations get deep and meaningful.”

There’s also a personal connection to the water of life that evokes some strong memories. “Whisky has always been part of my life, since I was a boy, sitting on the knee of my maternal grandfather,” he says. “He was a miner and his treat at the end of a hard day was a dram of whisky. I was always fascinated by the golden liquid he held in his rough hands and slowly sipped, his bantam chickens at his feet.”

This Christmas is an ideal time to give the gift of Storyman. Until Hogmanay, each bottle comes with an exclusive branded snifter, designed to enhance aroma and flavour. It’s the perfect present for those who appreciate the finer things in life, who cherish the company of good friends, and the power of enduring stories.
