Woman critical after four-car crash on Ayr bypass

The collision happened on the A77 Ayr bypass close to the Dutchhouse Roundabout at around 9.30pm on Wednesday.

A 57-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Ayr Hospital, where medical staff described her condition as critical.

No-one else was injured in the collision, police said.

Sergeant Iain Pittams said: “This was a serious road crash which has resulted in one woman sustaining serious injuries.

“The A77 was closed for a period whilst specialist officers conducted inquiries following the initial emergency response. Our inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“If anyone has witnessed the incident and is still to come forward, I ask that they contact road policing officers at Irvine with any information they have.”

Meanwhile, a man is in a critical condition in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary after the car he was travelling in crashed and overturned.

Four people were in the BMW X5 where the accident happened on the A74 near Stevenscroft at 11pm on Tuesday.

The car was travelling southbound when it left the carriageway and rolled on to an adjacent road, the B7076.

Three of the occupants sustained minor injuries but a 31-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

Sergeant Leigh McCulloch said: “This was a serious road crash which has left one occupant of the vehicle seriously injured.

“Lane one of the A74 (M) southbound was closed. A stretch of the B7076 was closed whilst specialist officers conducted inquiries following the initial emergency response. Inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“If anyone has any information that can help with our investigation, I ask that they contact road policing officers at Lockerbie.”
