Where are the luckiest cities in Scotland by lottery wins?

EVERYONE dreams of winning the lottery, but it appears that some places are luckier than others.

This week, David and Carol Martin, both 54, from Hawick in the Borders, won half of the UK’s biggest-ever Lotto jackpot in Saturday’s draw, a staggering £33 million.


With the addition of extra balls last year the odds of winning the Lotto jackpot shot up from 1 in 13,983,816 to 1 in 45,057,474.

So what can you do to improve your chances?

Glasgow’s “G” postcode has the most high tier lottery wins (over £50,000) across the country according to data from National Lottery operators, Camelot.

Scotland’s biggest city also came in at number four for high tier wins across the whole of the UK.

Since The National Lottery Began in 1994, Glasgow has celebrated a massive 559 major prize wins and seen 78 millionaires created in the area.

A National Lottery Spokesperson said, “Congratulations to the people of Glasgow who live in one of the luckiest postcodes in the UK. Around 30 major prizes are won each week, and with more than 3,200 National Lottery Millionaires across the UK, nearly everyone will have a lucky winner in their neighbourhood.”

Robert McLaughlan from Glasgow who scooped £4.5 million Lotto Jackpot as part of a pub syndicate said: “I always knew Glasgow was a lucky place to live and now it’s a proven fact. Winning has completely changed my life for the better and I hope it happens to another lucky Glaswegian soon.”

Aberdeen came in second with 218 major wins to date, 33 of those were millionaire wins with 21 occurring in the last five years alone.

Duncan Davidson, who won £4.5 Million back in 2012, commented: “I’m delighted to hear that Aberdeen is a lucky National Lottery hotspot and hopefully we can continue our winning streak!”

Dundee came in third, with 14 people becoming millionaires and 148 people winning top tier prizes. The “DD” postcode area comes tenth in number of winners across the whole of the UK.

The Capital city took third place, with winners keeping Edinburgh in the UK top 20 since the National Lottery started.
