The former Rangers manager is understood to be disquieted by the level of influence Green retains at board level, despite stepping down as chief executive three weeks ago. He is also deeply unhappy over the board’s behaviour towards Murray.

Green does not step down as director until the end of the month, until which time Smith is understood to fear he may still try to implement changes that will affect the club in the long-term.

It is claimed taht Green was involved, via conference call, in board discussions aimed at cutting Murray out of Ibrox.

Board members are thought to be unhappy with Murray’s conduct since arriving last summer, which has prompted attempts at his removal.
