Stewart Hamilton, 40 and Daniel Gallagher, 21, tried to extract cannabis oil from plants using butane gas.

But while the pair were working – using YouTube videos as an instruction manual – a spark caused an explosion sending the men across the room, setting the place alight and shattering the windows.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday, Hamilton from Govan pleaded guilty to attempting to produce cannabis oil and culpably and recklessly causing an explosion injuring himself and his co-accused and endangering the lives of others.

Gallagher, also from Govan, pleaded guilty to committing the same offences on 6 September 2014 at Crossloan Road, Govan.

Hamilton also admitted a charge of possessing cannabis.

Sheriff Daniel Scullion jailed Hamilton for 15 months and Gallagher for 12 months.

The court heard that following videos on the internet, Hamilton and Gallagher tried to extract oil from cannabis plants.

But their plans went awry when the gas ignited by what is believed to have been a kitchen appliance being used.

The gas exploded, causing a fire in the flat and blowing the men off of their feet and across the room.

The windows shattered and £6,500 damage was caused to the building.

After extinguishing the fire, the pair went to the Southern General hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Hamilton suffered eight percent burns on his head and body.
