TERRY Butcher, who had been odds-on to become Motherwell’s next manager, abruptly pulled out of the race to replace Stuart McCall last night.

Butcher, sacked by Hibs in June, was among a number of candidates interviewed for the vacancy in recent days, but he has decided against a second spell at the club he managed between 2002 and 2006.

Kenny Shiels (3-1), Dutchmen Mitchell van der Gaag (5-2) and Robert Maaskant (10-1), former Scunthorpe manager Ian Baraclough (5-1), and ex-Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano (6-1) now lead the way in the betting with Scottish bookmakers McBookie.com. Caretaker manager Kenny Black, who was McCall’s assistant, is viewed as a 33-1 outsider.
