Stars of the 80s: No 9, Tommy Coyne

A PROLIFIC scorer throughout his career, this Govan-born striker – who celebrates his 50th birthday next week – first came to prominence with Clydebank, where his goals earned him a move to Dundee United.

His Tannadice career was a disappointing one, however, and it wasn’t until a move to near neighbours Dundee that Coyne found his scoring boots again thanks to an excellent partnership with Keith Wright.

His form attracted the attention of Celtic, for whom he made a slow start before proving his worth.

A short spell in England with Tranmere followed before he returned to Scotland with Motherwell where he became the only player to finish as the league’s top scorer with three different clubs. Irish ancestry saw Coyne capped 22 times by the Republic of Ireland – including playing at the 1994 World Cup – while he also had a spell as player-manager of Clydebank.
