Europe respects minute’s silence in honour of Paris attacks victims

Scotland and much of Europe held a minute’s silence at 11am in honour of those who died during the Paris attacks on Friday. First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon paid tribute during a visit to Glasgow Central Mosque and urged the people of Scotland to unite in the wake of the tragedy. More than a hundred people died in various locations across France’s capital on Friday as a result of the terrorist attacks.

Police Scotland encourage greater awareness of NPS

The hashtag #NPSaware has been trending today on Twitter as Police Scotland host a New Psychoative Substances (NPS) awareness event. A recent crackdown on the selling and distribution of NPS has prompted the police force to educate the Scottish public about these so-called legal highs, stressing that although the drugs are ‘legal’ does not necessarily make them ‘safe’.

Anonymous declares war on Isis

Online collective Anonymous have released a video declaring “war” on Isis, threatening “massive cyber attacks”. Several media outlets say the French language video has been watched around a million times and shared across Facebook and Twitter. In the past Anonymous has worked to identify and take down extremist websites and social media accounts.

Social media campaign launched to get Eagles of Death Metal to number one

Fans of rock band Eagles of Death Metal who were performing at Le Bataclan in Paris on the night of the Paris attacks have launched a campaign to get the band to number one in the music charts. The Guardian writes that a specially created Facebook page has encouraged fans and mourners to buy the Eagles of Death Metal track Save a Prayer (a cover of Duran Duran’s 1982 single) in support of the victims who lost their lives during and after the Bataclan concert. So far the song has reached number one in both the Amazon and iTunes rock charts.

Olly Murs apologises after live TV slip up

Presenter and singer Olly Murs has apologised after prematurely telling X Factor contestant Monica Michael she had been eliminated from the competition on live TV. Michael was later voted off by members of the public, prompting speculation that the result was fixed and the presenter already knew which contestant would be sent home.
