Rugby round-up: Boroughmuir|Stewart’s Melville|Watsonians

Boroughmuir are one of only two sides still unbeaten in the BT Premiership after the Meggetland men battled back from 20-3 down approaching half-time to see off Melrose 34-25 at the Greenyards.

With only a Chris Laidlaw penalty to show for their efforts at that stage, ’Muir clawed back seven points with a try from Callum Reid, converted by Laidlaw, shortly before the interval.

They drew level when Grant McConnell touched down and Laidlaw converted before slotting a second penalty. Jack Cosgrove dotted down with eight minutes left to give ’Muir the lead for the first time. Laidlaw converted before claiming a self-converted try to secure the bonus point for ’Muir who finished the match with 14 men after Finn Field, who had been sin-binned in the first half, was shown a second yellow card.

Currie also rediscovered the winning feeling when they ousted Selkirk 21-16 at Malleny Park. Two penalties by James Semple left the hosts 8-6 adrift at the break and the stand-off booted a third three pointer to edge Currie ahead in 53 minutes. Tries by Chris Logan and Travis Brooke, the first converted by Semple, clinched the win before a late try and a penalty gave the Borderers a narrow defeat bonus point.

Watsonians sit two points adrift of pacesetters Marr in BT National Division One after taking all five league points from a 31-13 win over Capital rivals Stewart’s Melville at Myreside. Mark Bertram bagged a double for the hosts, who finished the match without skipper Martin Christie after he was dismissed for two yellow cards, and there was one try apiece for Ali Marsh, Ewan Miller and Scott McLeod. Nick McCashin scored all of the visitors’ points from a try, conversion and two penalties before going off with an injury.

Edinburgh Accies moved up to fourth when they chalked up a 34-14 win at home to Jed-Forest. A penalty try set the ball rolling for the Capital side and there was a double for Alex Glashan plus one each for Callum Black and Facundo Beltramino who also weighed in with a penalty and three conversions.

Former Scotland sevens international Michael Maltman had his first try since returning to the Musselburgh club but the Stoneyhill side had to settle for a four-try bonus from their trip to face Aberdeen Grammar after going down 48-35.

Preston Lodge surrendered their unbeaten record in Division Two at Hamilton Bulls although they produced the highlight when Dale Gordon raced the length of the field for one of his side’s three tries in a 43-17 loss – Andy Horne and Johnny Brash bagged the others.

Elsewhere, Lasswade suffered a 40-19 defeat away to Aberdeenshire.

In Division Three, Haddington and East Kilbride fought out an 18-18 draw, RHC Cougars took a narrow defeat bonus from an 18-12 loss at unbeaten Dumfries Saints, and Livingston lost 50-26 at home to Orkney.
