Rangers: Andy Goram hails Walter Smith approach

ANDY GORAM believes Walter Smith will successfully employ the same uncompromising approach as Rangers chairman as he did during his trophy-laden periods as manager of the club.

Former Rangers goalkeeper Goram, who found himself on the receiving end of Smith’s ire on more than one occasion, is delighted with an appointment he is convinced signals better times ahead at Ibrox. “It’s perfect,” said Goram. “It has been a good few days for Rangers. Walter will not do something unless it is for the good of the club. When he came in as a non-executive director, I don’t think he would have joined the board if there were shenanigans at that level.

“So for him to become the chairman, there can’t be any shenanigans going on in that way now. He will be able to manage people in the boardroom. He was a fantastic coach but an even better man-manager.

“He won’t stand for any messing about and he’ll be the same as chairman. I was witness to that myself when I was in his office a few times as a player. He put me on the transfer list and people thought it was a kick up the backside for me. But he would have sold me if he’d had the chance. He is true to his word, he does things for the good of Rangers.

“Obviously the sceptics will think this has happened in time to get the season ticket money in. But Rangers need someone to steady the ship at board level and there is nobody better than Walter.

“If having Walter back as chairman isn’t credibility for Rangers, then I don’t know what is. There’s no doubt he has looked deeply into it and there’s no way he would put himself in a situation where he is going to be made to look like a fool.

“It is the biggest boost Rangers fans could have and it is the biggest boost Ally McCoist could have as manager. For me, everything is looking good, the club are in a good position now. The football wasn’t fantastic last season, we all know that. But now Ally (McCoist)is able to bring his own players in and change that. The money is there for that and the picture looks good.”
