Nicky Law wants Stuart McCall as Rangers boss

The Championship club’s reserves of confidence have run dry since Ally McCoist was put on gardening leave back in December. McCoist’s assistant Kenny McDowall was put in temporary charge, but then announced he was working a year’s notice.

The caretaker has since confessed it could take five years to fix Rangers, and he suggested on Wednesday that tomorrow’s match against Cowdenbeath at Central Park could be his last in charge.

With Dave King poised to take control of the club at today’s general meeting, the manager’s postion is expected to come under scrutiny. Law believes McCall has the right character for the position.

“It would be fantastic if Stuart was to get the job,” Law said. “He’s a legend here and gave great service to the club as a player. I’ve no doubt he would do the same as a manager.

“Whoever comes in will find it is a huge job. There’s a lot to do on the playing side but knowing Stuart’s character it’s not something that would worry him. He’d relish it.

“He has a great reputation for improving people, as he did at Motherwell. I’m not just talking about myself, but others who moved on like Shaun Hutchison, Darren Randolph – the list is endless.

“He has improved these guys and they have gone on to improve their careers. I’ve no doubt he’d do the same here.

“There are 12 guys out of contract but you also have the five loan lads from Newcastle. There could be 17 boys not here next season and only six or seven still contracted.

“Whoever becomes the new manager will have a huge job because they will have to build a whole new team.”
