Nicky Clark believes Rangers can win in style

Rangers were often as hard to watch as they were hard to beat as they ground their way to the Third Division title but Clark believes that the arrival of new signings Jon Daly, Arnold Peralta and Nicky Law will increase the entertainment value at Ibrox.

Clark is convinced that Law is the man who will run the show for them. Law scored two superb goals in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Albion Rovers as Rangers got their season off and running with a convincing win at Almondvale in the Ramsdens Cup. Former Hearts pair Ian Black and David Templeton were also on target in the match

“It is important we win with style,” said Clark yesterday. “We’ve got a really good squad this year, the boys the manager has brought in have been great and you saw Nicky scoring those two goals.

“We have got a good chance to go on and do really well this season and, hopefully, we’ll win the league comfortably.

“Nicky is a great player. He has got loads of energy, he can score goals and he creates chances. He is perfect for the boys like me because he can create chances and put you through.

“I am looking forward to playing with him but it’s not just Nicky – Lee Wallace crossed the ball into the box for Nicky’s first goal and he bombs up and down the wing all day.

“There are other boys in the squad, like Lewis Macleod, who can also create chances, so it is looking good.

“David Templeton is another player who has got a trick in his locker. He goes by players really easily – well, at least it looks easy for him! We have got a lot of good players who will create chances for me and big Jon or whoever is playing up front.”

Rangers legend Mark Hateley also expects watching his former club to be a more pleasurable pursuit this season. The big Englishman formed a potent strike partnership with manager McCoist and he argues that his old friend is now in a position to not just win but win well.

“When you throw a group of players together like last year then it’s all crash, bang wallop and a bit hit and miss,” he said.

“They managed to win the league but they didn’t do it how some of the teams of the past did it.

“It was hurriedly put together last season but this year they will look to win the league with a bit of style. There were glimpses last season, as we seen when they beat Motherwell in the League Cup, but the performances were up and down and there was no consistency. That’s what you get with a group thrown together.

“It’s been different this summer as he has been able to sort out the wheat from the chaff and acquire a better quality of player to add to the better ones who were here last year.”

Clark and Hateley were speaking at the launch of Follow We Will, a book about reaction to the club’s liquidation last year, with proceeds going to the Rangers Charity Foundation.
