Mohsni: Indiscipline may cost me Rangers career

The French-Tunisian defender incurred the wrath of manager Ally McCoist when he headbutted Derby striker Chris Martin in the stomach in a pre-season friendly two weeks ago which resulted in a two-match suspension.

It was the latest episode of ill-discipline from the 27-year-old who was cautioned 11 times and sent off once in 32 matches last season.

It was the continuation of a hot-headed reputation he accrued in English football with Southend and Ipswich Town when controversy never seemed too far away. In three seasons he was sent off four times and booked on 21 occasions.

Mohsni knows he has made life extremely difficult by forcing himself out of the selection process with Lee McCulloch, Marius Zaliukas and Darren McGregor all vying for central defensive slots. And he fears that one more mistake could mean the end of his Rangers career. He said: “I think it would be too much if I had another red card.

“It would depend on the situation, of course. If I had two tackles then that is fair but if I lose my temper like at Derby, then yeah.

“I don’t know. I am not in the head of my manager so I don’t know, but of course we had a chat. He knows me so he knows I was upset. I need to focus and I think I can win back his trust – if I play, of course.

“The first thing I was thinking was I could lose my place because if McGregor and Zaliukas do well and the manager likes them and starts matching them with the others in the back four then I could lose my place.

“Sitting on the bench would be very, very hard. This is my first worry. The relationship I have with the manager and the staff is very nice. I like them and I want to stay at this club so I was more upset with myself. They have given me a lot and what I gave back was not what I wanted.”

Mohsni is available tomorrow night when former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson brings Clyde to Ibrox for a second round tie in the Petrofac Training Cup.
