McGregor: Novi Sad atmosphere will not faze Scots

GOALKEEPER Allan McGregor believes Scotland’s players will be able to cope with the white-hot atmosphere in Novi Sad tomorrow night.

The Serbian fans are known for creating a intimidating setting for visiting teams and that was emphasised when they defeated Group A rivals Wales 6-1 at the Karadorde Stadium last year.

McGregor, who has tasted the traditional southern European supporter hostility while playing for his club, Turkish side Besiktas, feels Gordon Strachan’s men are experienced enough to deal with anything the crowd has to offer.

“The manager hasn’t spoken about what we can expect in terms of the atmosphere, but he will, said McGregor. “We’re not concerned about the atmosphere.

“Most of the lads have experienced that kind of thing before. I enjoying playing in a good atmosphere and sometimes that can actually help you. Hopefully the atmosphere will be good.”

Despite Friday night’s defeat to Wales, which leaves Scotland rooted to the foot of Group A, McGregor still has faith in the current squad and feels it is one win away from being able to make tangible progress.

“I think we’ve got a great group of players. Things have gone against us in games.

“I don’t know why we haven’t clicked as a team. We just need to keep working hard and try and get the first win. If we get that first win we can move on.”

McGregor did however admit that Scotland need to begin games better if they are to obtain that much-needed win.

“Things didn’t go to plan against Wales but we started the second half well and we need to take the positives going into the Serbia match,” he said.

“We need to start the game better than we did on Friday night to stand any chance.”
