Looking ahead to 2025, 54 per cent of Scots think it is likely Scotland will become independent, 44 per cent think it is unlikely and 2 per cent don’t know, an Ipsos Mori poll for STV found.

The survey also found that most Scots think Scotland will be a more equal society, more than half of its energy supplies will come from renewables, students born in Scotland will be paying tuition fees and around half think there will be a cure for most cancers in the next 10 years.

Only 40 per cent think Scotland will qualify for an international football tournament, while fewer (35 per cent) believe Scotland will win the Rugby World Cup.

Mark Diffley, director at Ipsos Mori Scotland, said: “This poll represents good news for Yes supporters, with more than half of Scots believing independence is likely by 2025.

“Opinions may change if and when a second referendum is announced but, for now, a majority of Scots seem to think we are on the road to independence.”
