The Stand Glasgow sets admission price as two bags of food

Instead of handing over cash, those entering The Stand comedy club in Glasgow will be expected to donate items for Greater Maryhill Foodbank.

The show on December 23, which features Hardeep Singh Kohli, Janey Godley, Stephen Carlin, Gareth Waugh and Scott Agnew, follows similar fundraisers in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Greater Maryhill Foodbank, which covers much of north-west Glasgow, said it had fed 15,000 people throughout the year.

“We don’t put a limit on how long someone’s crisis lasts,” said Julie Webster, foodbank coordinator. “If someone is facing a benefit sanction of three months, we will feed them for that three months.

“Everyone that comes in our doors is individually assessed to decide how long we should provide emergency food provision. Some people it can be two weeks, others it could be 10.”

The link-up between The Stand and Greater Maryhill Foodbank is thanks to former Scotsman columnist Godley - a regular performer at the club as well as a frequent volunteer at the charity.

“Janey has raised lots of cash for us in the past,” added Wesbter. “She has done several paintings which were auctioned off on our behalf, as well as other fundraising.

“She’s a huge supporter of this foodbank. When the possibility of a fundraising gig came up, I was asked if we would prefer the proceeds or food - we really need food at this time of year, so we decided on that.”

Organisers are asking fans to bring non-perishable items such as tinned tuna or meat, cereals and toiletries.

The event is expected to sell-out and organisers recommend booking a space in advance.

It was revealed today that Scots are feeling extra-generous this festive season, with more than 500,000 meals donated to the Trussell Trust, which runs 50 food banks across Scotland, following a national three-day supermarket collection.

The Trussell Trust, which runs around a third of food banks in Scotland, estimates that demand is approaching record levels this December.

It is expected more than 16,000 referrals will have been made to its food banks by general practitioners, social workers and health visitors.
