Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the Royal Navy and the Coastguard were all called to the scene of the incident which unfolded around 1.30pm on Wednesday after the River Girvan burst its banks.

The bus involved was a Stagecoach single decker vehicle, thought to be a service 58.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said a Royal Navy helicopter assisted with the rescue. The passengers were assessed at a local community centre by medical staff. None needed to go to hospital.

The village sits on the banks of the Water of Girva, or River Girvan, a 28-mile long stretch of water which also passes through the villages of Straiton and Kirkmichael on its way to the Firth of Clyde at Girvan Harbour.

The incident comes as Storm Frank wreaks havoc across Scotland, with villages flooded, public transport services affected, 5,000 homes without power and sporting events cancelled.
