Germany 2 Scotland 1 (European Championship qualifier, September 2003)

Berti Vogts’ return to Germany ended in despair as his compatriots inflicted a fatal blow to Scotland’s hopes of reaching Euro 2004. The red card shown to substitute Maurice Ross killed off the visitors’ comeback plan in Dortmund after Neil McCann had handed the Scots a lifeline following strikes by home duo Fredi Bobic and Michael Ballack.

Germany 0 Scotland 1 (friendly, April 1999)

This famous Scottish victory - just their second ever against a unified German side - was all the more impressive considering manager Craig Brown was forced to field a depleted side. Don Hutchison scored the only goal of the game at the Weserstadion in Bremen in his first start for the national team.

West Germany 2 Scotland 1 (friendly, March 1974)

Scotland warmed up for the 1974 World Cup with a friendly clash against the tournament hosts in Frankfurt. Kenny Dalglish could only grab a late consolation strike, though, after two quickfire goals from Paul Breitner and Jurgen Grabowski late in the first half had put the Germans ahead at the Waldstadion.

West Germany 3 Scotland 2 (World Cup qualifier, October 1969)

Scotland kicked off at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg knowing a win would keep them in the hunt for a play-off with the Germans to decide who would go to the 1970 World Cup. But despite taking an early lead through Jimmy Johnstone and then Alan Gilzean equalising two home strikes, the Scots lost out on a place at the Mexico finals when Reinhard Libuda netted Germany’s winner nine minutes from time. Tommy Gemmell was also famously sent off for booting Helmut Haller up the backside.

West Germany 2 Scotland 2 (friendly, May 1964)

The Scots had to fight back from two goals down after Hamburg striker Uwe Seeler netted a first-half brace at the Niedersachsenstadion in Hanover. But a late double by Tottenham-bound Gilzean claimed a decent draw for Ian McColl’s side in front of a 75,000-strong crowd.

West Germany 1 Scotland 3 (friendly, May 1957)

Scotland racked up an impressive away victory against the reigning World Cup winners at the Neckarstadion in Stuttgart. The majority of the 80,000 crowd were left disappointed when Bobby Collins grabbed a double before Jackie Mudie sealed the win ahead of a meaningless Gerhard Siedl goal.

Germany 1 Scotland 1 (friendly, June 1929)

The nations met for the first time in front of a 40,000-strong crowd at Berlin’s Deutsches Stadion. Hertha Berlin’s Hans Ruch netted just after the break but St Johnstone’s Willie Imrie levelled at the death to ensure the Scots did not suffer defeat in just their second ever match on the continent.
