Former Scots rugby player Jim Inglis dies, aged 87

THE Scottish Rugby Union have led tributes to former Scotland prop Jim Inglis after he passed away aged 87.

The man affectionately known as “Basher” was capped against England at Murrayfield in 1952, having also represented the South of Scotland.

One of the great characters of Borders rugby, he joined his hometown club Selkirk at 16 and served the Philiphaugh outfit as a player, administrator and then president during his 71-year association.

In a statement, the SRU said: “Scottish Rugby is saddened to learn of the death of former Scotland prop Jim Inglis. He passed away last Friday night aged 87.

“Jim, known to all and sundry as “Basher”, gave a lifetime of service to Selkirk Rugby Club, both as a player and administrator.

“It was a fitting tribute that, alongside his wife Mary, Jim received the Spirit of Rugby Award from Scottish Rugby earlier this year.

“He served as President of the Selkirk club and the Border League and always gave a hearty welcome to supporters at Philiphaugh.

“Scottish Rugby extends its sincere condolences to all his family and friends.”
