Ewan Miller scores a hat-trick as Watsonians beat Peebles

Back-row Ewan Miller scored a hat-trick of tries as Watsonians got their BT National League One campaign off to a good start with a bonus-point victory over Peebles last night.

In the end the home side came out on top 33-10 and ran in five tries at Myreside as they aim to better last year’s fourth-place finish.

Watsonians gave debuts to six players in the starting XV including former pros David Blair and James King at stand-off and centre respectively. The other four were Tom Johnson, Romain Denonain, Scott McLeod and Mark Bertram.

The Capital men were on the mark from the off and had secured the bonus point with four tries before the interval.

The scores in the first half for Watsonians came from ex-Edinburgh Rugby man King, Hawick’s player of the year last year McLeod and two from Miller.Blair converted three.

In the first 20 minutes of the second half they added another try thanks to Miller’s third and they were 33-3 up after Blair converted. Peebles finished strongly and a converted Neil Hogarth score made it 33-10.
