Elgin set their sights on top spot

ELGIN City can knock Rangers off their perch next Sunday if they beat Ally McCoist’s side at Borough Briggs following their 4-1 success at Stirling Albion, where Craig Gunn fired in a first-half hat-trick.

Gunn hit home Brian Cameron’s pass after six minutes and then netted from 12 yards out 21 minutes later.

The striker completed his three-goal haul on 31 minutes from another Cameron assist before Stuart Leslie smashed home the fourth with Graham Weir’s deflected effort pulling a goal back for Albion before half time.

Elgin manager Ross Jack said: “We played a first half of scintillating football and now we can focus on Rangers. The whole town is buzzing and Borough Briggs will be a fantastic place next Sunday. It is a dream to be competing with Rangers for top spot but we will give it our best shot.”

Peterhead moved into third place, five points behind Elgin, courtesy of Robbie Winters’ first-half headed winner in their 1-0 success over Clyde and Queen’s Park remain fourth following their 1-1 draw with Montrose where Lloyd Young scored in the first minute for the Links Park side and Paul Gallacher curled home a leveller in the second half.

Berwick Rangers saw off visitors Annan 3-1 with Darren Lavery, Ross Gray and Dean Hoskins all netting before Graeme Ramage grabbed a late consolation goal.
