This is double the number of motorists who have already claimed the plug-in car grant since it was created in 2011.

Vehicles using electricity for some or all of their journeys are eligible for the subsidy, part of a £400 million package. The grant was previously only guaranteed to run until February, but has been extended until at least March 2018.

The announcement came as the government published its new air quality plan.
