OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE: BOTANIC LIGHTS - SEASONS IN COLOUR

The award-winning Botanic Lights outdoor experience is back at Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden for its second year this winter. Enter the gardens after hours to follow a magical trail of light and marvel at the stunning colours of the autumn season, accentuated by special light projections. More than 23,000 visitors enjoyed the first Botanic Lights event last year and this year the experience - put together by lighting designer Grant Anderson - is bigger and better than ever. You may even be lucky enough to spot badgers, foxes and other nighttime residents of the Botanics during your visit.

MUSIC: DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE

US indie stalwarts Death Cab For Cutie – fronted by Ben Gibbard, also of The Postal Service – had their big break over here with single, I Will Follow You into the Dark, in 2005. Ten years and three albums later, Death Cab are still going strong as they tour the UK and Europe this month. Tonight’s stop is at Glasgow’s O2 Academy where the three-piece will be treating fans to tracks from their latest album Kintsugi.

THEATRE: THREADS

The Barony Theatre in Bo’ness hosts the touring Stellar Quines Theatre Company for one night only this evening with their production of Sylvia Dow’s Threads. Dow brings to life the personal stories of Scottish knitters through the ages (from 19th century mill workers to the members of modern day knitting groups) weaving historical facts, anecdotes, song and dance into her narrative. Based on stories told by members of the writer’s local community in Hawick, Threads captures Scotland’s emotional connection to the country’s industrial history.

COMEDY: JEREMY HARDY

Comedian Jeremy Hardy is best known as a Radio 4 regular, but he’s been doing live stand-up since 1984. With an easygoing manner on stage and a set packed full of smart satire, you’ll wonder why you haven’t seen Hardy live sooner.

FILM: FULL METAL JACKET

Catch Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Vietnam war movie Full Metal Jacket back on the big screen where it belongs tonight at Edinburgh’s Cameo Cinema. With stellar performances from R Lee Emery and Vincent D’Onofrio, the scathingly witty film was one of the highest grossing cinema releases of 1987 despite limited distribution. Full Metal Jacket still stands strong today, and is one of Stanley Kubrick’s best and most beloved films.
