Raisin Monday marked at St Andrews University
Up to 2,000 students at St Andrews University took part in a fancy dress foam fight to mark “Raisin Monday” yesterday.
The 600-year-old tradition stems from the time when new students gave a pound of raisins to their academic “parents” as a thank-you for looking after them. Nowadays, new students present them with a bottle of wine rather than dried fruit.
The annual foam fight is the finale of Raisin Weekend, when student “parents” give out tasks to the first year freshers they have adopted as “children”.
Usually held in St Salvator’s Quad, this year the event was held on the Lower College Law, due to a restoration project.
