Former undercover officer quits St Andrews university post

Former undercover police officer, Bob Lambert, who had sex with his female targets has quit his post at St Andrews University.

The academic who fathered a child with one woman, has left his position as lecturer in terrorism studies at the prestigious institution.

A former special branch officer in the Metropolitan Police, Lambert worked for the controversial Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) in the 1980s and infiltrated animal rights and environmental groups.

In a statement, he said: “I have resigned from my part-time teaching positions at the University of St Andrews and London Metropolitan University and would like to take this opportunity to thank management, colleagues and students at both institutions for their kindness and support.

“Henceforward, I will pursue my academic interests in responses to terrorism and political violence as an independent researcher. I will also continue to co-operate with the investigations and inquiry into undercover policing.”

Mr Lambert’s resignation follows a campaign calling for his sacking, which was backed by high-profile supporters including the writer and environmentalist George Monbiot.

A university spokeswoman said: “Dr Lambert resigned from his post as a lecturer at St Andrews with effect from the end of the current term.”
