Edie’s name to fly high into the sky

A grieving Kirkcaldy family have been ‘amazed’ at the public support for their campaign to have a plane named after their daughter.

More than 135,000 people voted online for a new Thomson Boeing 787 to be named after little Edie Murphy.

The two-year-old passed away suddenly on October 16 after suffering from a virus.

Soon after, friends of her parents Tom and Cheryl, who also have a five-month old daughter, Annie, entered Edie’s name into the competition run by the holiday company.

Their campaign soon went viral and was trending on Twitter with the hashtag #FlyHighEdie.

Votes came flooding in from around the world, even from as far as even Australia.

And today Thomson broke the news that Edie has won, tweeting: “We are pleased to announce that the winner of our Name Our Plane competition is Edie!”

Speaking to the Press during the campaign, Cheryl said: “I can’t believe the reaction, we’re totally amazed.

“Obviously Edie was so, so special to us abut it seems as though she’s touched everybody.

“We’ve had lots of lovely messages from people.

“It’s been the most difficult time but this campaign it’s given us something positive to focus on.

“Our whole world has fallen apart but some good has come out of it.

“We’re so grateful to everybody who’s voted for Edie.”
