Bridge workers suspended after climbing down tower in high winds

TWO workers on the Queensferry Crossing have been suspended after climbing down from a lift which had broken down 700ft above sea level as the bridge was buffeted by strong winds.

Five men became stranded when it was caught by a sudden gust of wind, causing it break down shortly before around 2pm on Thursday

The Alimak hoist is used to transport workers up and down the central tower of the bridge, which is under construction on the Firth of Forth.

Two of the men climbed out of a hatch on top of the lift, and scambled down a nearby ladder to safety.

Such was the force of the winds tha the neighbouring Forth Road Bridge was closed to double decker buses at around the same time.

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “An investigation is underway into an incident involving five workers in one of the lifts on the Centre Tower, no injuries were sustained to any personnel.

“Health and Safety is the most important aspect of the construction of the Queensferry Crossing. The project has an excellent safety record to date and employee and public safety is paramount at all times.

“Failure to comply with health and safety procedures is an internal disciplinary offence. An investigation is underway and suitable steps will be taken when the outcome is known.”
