Dundee United fans face trial over Dynamo violence

SEVEN Dundee United fans are facing trial accused of “inciting public disorder” by hurling objects at Dynamo Moscow fans and brawling with them in the stands during a Europa League qualifier last year.

Darren Elder, David Lawson, Sean Duffy, Greg Campbell, Kevin Drummond, Rory Mulligan and Dale Kelly appeared in the dock at Dundee Sheriff Court today over disturbances at the match last August.

They were arrested following a lengthy investigation into alleged violent behaviour at the match - which finished in a 2-2 draw.

Violence broke out in the Fair Play Stand - where Dundee United fans were sat in the top tier, with visiting supporters below.

Russian fans were seen clambering up into the top part of the stand and brawling with home supporters.

The seven United fans now face a charge on indictment of behaving in a threatening manner - which could lead to jail terms of up to five years in the event of guilty verdicts.

The men - who are aged between 21 and 32 - are alleged to have thrown “unknown items” from the upper tier of Tannadice’s Fair Play Stand into the lower tier, which housed the travelling Russian fans.

They are then accused of engaging in “stand up fights” with a number of people from the tier below.

Elder, 21, of Broadford Terrace, Dundee, Lawson, 25, of Grampian Gardens, Dundee, Duffy, 24, of Muirfield Court, Dundee, Campbell, 29, of Finavon Place, Dundee, Drummond, 32, of no fixed abode, Mulligan, 30, of Arklay Place and Kelly, 24, of Byron Terrace, pleaded not guilty to the charge under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

Fiscal depute Vicky Bell asked that the case be continued for further negotiations between the Crown and defence lawyers.

Sheriff Tom Hughes continued the case until September 13.
