Dundee United elect not to sign Neil Trotman

Dundee United have dropped their interest in trialist defender Neil Trotman.

The Tangerines ran the rule over the big Englishman in Saturday’s 1-0 win away to FA Cup holders Wigan at the DW Stadium as they gear up for Friday night’s top-flight opener at newly-promoted Partick Thistle.

The 26-year-old ex-Oldham and Chesterfield man was bidding to win a deal at Tannadice but boss Jackie McNamara has already brought in nine new players in the summer and won’t be making any more moves to bring in further reinforcements.

United assistant manager Simon Donnelly said: “That one won’t be happening. We’ve spent our quota for the moment so that’s it.”

United take on Thistle in Friday night’s curtain-raiser at Firhill which sees McNamara and Donnelly return to their former club for the first time since their acrimonious departure in January sparked a bitter war of words between the two clubs.

And Donnelly has warned his side they’ll have to be at their best to beat Alan Archibald’s Jags. He said: “They’ve got good players as we know only too well having worked with them. I think they’ll do well this season – but hopefully after Friday!”
