THEATRE: MOTHER GOOSE

The first of a run of shows at Kirkcaldy’s Adam Smith Theatre, Dame Billy Mack takes centre stage in Mother Goose. It’s classic panto fare for all the family, though it won’t be without its fair share of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it innuendo.

FILM: BLISS

In partnership with Cinema for All, the women’s library are showing Bliss, an acclaimed 2007 film set in Turkey. The story follows 17-year-old Meryem, a girl whose residents call for her to be killed to restore the honour of her family and village. Instead of carrying it out, her cousin Cemal travels through the country knowing they can never go back home. Based on a novel by Zülfü Livaneli.

TALK: WHAT MAKES GOOD CHOCOLATE?

Sophie Latinis of the Pittenweem Chocolate Company will be taking a master class on what goes into good chocolate, from bean to bar. Attendees get to try some chocolate (obviously), which you can wash down with more chocolate (the hot, liquid variety).

THEATRE: TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT

Based on the novel by Graham Greene, Giles Havergal’s stage adaptation follows retired banker Henry, who leads a dull yet contented life. At his mother’s funeral, he meets his elderly aunt at the service, and soon finds himself mired in a world of drug smuggling, war criminals and shady secret service operatives.

EVENT: HUSH HOUR

“Bring a book, sip a cocktail, bask in the yuletide glow of readerly fun,” urge the staff at Lucky Liquor Co on Edinburgh’s Queen Street. It’s a unique proposition: a near-silent bar where reading isn’t just tolerated but encouraged. We’ll say cheers to that – quietly.
