What’s On In Scotland: Five things to do tonight

EVENT: MINISTRY OF SCIENCE LIVE

Ministry of Science Live is a family-friendly show where science is brought to life. There are lots of eyecatching attractions: a hovercraft, a human cannon, and nitrogen-frozen flowers among them.

The 90-minute show should be an entertaining romp that is both educational and has the visual “wow” factor for kids.

EXHIBITION: THE HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING

This display draws on rarely-seen material in the University of Dundee Museum Collections from Sir Gavin Hawkly-Longfarthing, a Scotsman with an extraordinary life.

His work touched nearly all realms of science, including botany, molecular biology, nuclear physics, cosmology, geology, and entomology. There are some more obscure -ologys, too: trichology, spermology, kymatology, microphilosophy, thermology, caliology, methodology, and mixology.

THEATRE: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

David Suchet (Agatha Christie’s Poirot) stars as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s Victorian masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest. Pulling satire from the stiff Victorian manners, it’s one of the playwright’s most celebrates works. In her review of the production at Pitlochry Festival Theatre earlier this year, Joyce McMillan wrote it was “a frothy tale of budding romance between two strikingly camp young men, and two fiercely intelligent young women.”

MUSIC: PAUL WELLER

Paul Weller is on tour with his twelfth album, Saturns Pattern. The Mod rocker described his record to the Scotsman’s Janet Christie as ”quite sort of joyful and positive, an up-full record,” and if that sounds up your street then you could see the former Jam frontman in Glasgow tonight.

MUSIC: CHVRCHES

Scottish electronic three-piece Chvrches released Every Eye Open in September, an “unabashed pop album,” as Fiona Shepherd put it. But out of context that description probably undersells their appeal. Marrying soaring hooks and a pop sensibility to chilly synth tones, the trio have been on an upward curve which has seen them bag a Brit Award nomination in February and feature in the OST for The Hunger Games: MockingJay Part 1 last year.
