NHS Tayside nurse wins hero award

Karen Duncan works with Perth’s One-Stop Women’s Learning Service (OWLS), which assists convicted women who seek to be re-integrated into their communities.

OWLS aims to reduce re-offending rates as well as improve clients’ mental wellbeing, physical health and employability opportunities.

NHS Tayside Chairman Professor John Connell said, “This is a fantastic achievement for Karen and I am delighted to congratulate her on her success at the Scottish Health Awards.

“Karen makes a huge difference to the lives of her clients and it’s wonderful to see her work recognised with this national award.”

The nurse was one of three finalists at the awards to be selected from NHS Tayside. Ninewells Hospital’s hard work was recognised, with consultant physician Dr John Dillon nominated for the Doctor Award and the Ninewells Blood and Transplant Scotland team were considered in the Top Team category.

Professor Connell added: “Our staff really do go the extra mile for their patients. I would also like to congratulate our other finalists, Dr John Dillon and the organ donation and transplantation team.

“They are a great example of NHS Tayside staff’s commitment to provide the best possible care for our patients.”

The Scottish Health Awards are a yearly event designed to recognise the work of NHS staff, support workers, volunteers and specialist teams who provide high levels of patient care.

Karen’s achievement comes as the second consecutive win by a staff member from NHS Tayside in as many years.
