Currie’s defeat of Melrose helps Heriot’s after draw

The champions conceded 15 points in as many minutes but battled back through a try from Jack Turley, converted by Graham Wilson, who also booted a penalty as Heriot’s reached the break 18-10 in arrears. However, another Wilson three pointer and a try by Struan Cessford squared matters.

The damage caused to Heriot’s by losing two points was limited after Currie turned on the style to battle back and halt a three-match losing run with a 20-13 win over Melrose at Malleny Park. Joe Reynolds landed an early penalty for the hosts who trailed 10-3 at the break. However, with the elements in their favour, Currie dominated the second period and chalked up the victory through tries from Ross Weston and a fine solo effort from Travis Brooke, both converted by Reynolds, who also banged over a penalty.

Elsewhere, Boroughmuir had to settle for a narrow defeat bonus point after suffering a third home loss on successive weekends when they went down 31-26 to Stirling County.

Boroughmuir had a try piece from Jordan Edmunds, Greg Cannie and Dougie Steele, who kicked the other points, but that was to no avail against a Stirling side for whom Shaun Treweek weighed in with 16 points that included one of his side’s four tries.

In BT National Division One Watsonians recorded an impressive 44-24 win at GHA. Watsonians were well in control at half-time, which they reached with a 26-10 advantage before going on to emphasise their superiority in the second period.

The five-point haul was enough to draw Sonians level with their next opponents Marr who were pushed all the way before securing a 19-13 win at home to Edinburgh Accies. The Raeburn Place men’s narrow defeat bonus leaves them ten points off top spot. Accies made a promising start and led 13-3 at half-time but were unable to hold off a strong finish by the hosts.

Musselburgh surrendered their unbeaten home record and slipped to sixth place in the table after suffering a 45-23 defeat against Jed-Forest. A try by William Lander gave Burgh an early lead, but the Borderers assumed control and took all five league points with an impressive performance.

Elsewhere, a converted Sean Murchie try kept Stewart’s Melville in touch at half-time of their match away to Dundee High, but the Taysiders clicked through the gears in the second half for a 24-7 win that leaves the Invereleith men joint bottom of the table.

Preston Lodge battled to a 29-15 win away to Kirkcaldy in Division Two but there was disappointment for Lasswade who went down 27-5 at home to Cartha Queens Park.

In Division Three, Haddington had to settle for a narrow defeat bonus from their 24-19 reverse at Perthshire, and there were losses for Livingston and RHC Cougars against Dalziel and West of Scotland respectively.
