Whyte, who is wanted by police in connection with his Rangers takeover, has said he will return to the UK to help the officers with their inquiries.

However, a source close to his family told the Sunday Mail: “We’ve seen reports that he says he’ll come back and give himself up but it would be a

Surprise if he did that. He has never faced up to trouble before.”

They described Whyte’s whole involvement with Rangers as “astonishing, bizarre and unbelievable”, adding: “He did talk in the past about buying Motherwell.

“But he got involved with Rangers instead – and that was unbelievable. It was very unlike him – the most stupid thing he has ever done.”
