Green made the comments as he defended his manager and pledged to stick by him despite admitting that performances have not always been of the level expected.

Green said: “This is the worst Rangers team you have ever seen. The fans are not happy, the board are not happy and Ally McCoist isn’t happy at that.

“The responsibility lies with Ally as manager and myself as chief executive. I’m backing him and we are going to get through this. His job’s safe, absolutely.”

Green also railed against the “desperados” who deserted the club in the wake of the club’s liquidation, and appeared to mock SFA chief Neil Doncaster’s controversial pay rise.

“It’s been a real adjustment for us in terms of things like the standard of the pitches. And the players have all been big enough to say at certain times they have not performed. But we were only allowed 22 players in the SFL over 21, and the first seven were those desperados who walked out on Rangers, like Allan McGregor, Stevie Naismith, Kyle Lafferty and Steven Whittaker.”

Asked about Doncaster, Green said: “I was weeping for Scotland and for football when I saw that - my eyebrows were all sodden.

“Any pay rise in today’s climate is good. Rangers employees have not had a pay rise in three years. His board thought it was deserved. Perhaps it was for the year previous. Maybe his performance in that time warranted it.”
