Cala Homes is planning more than 200 homes in Balerno

The Edinburgh-based firm said the development, at Newmills Road in the capital’s leafy suburb, would provide a variety of properties for “first-time buyers, to expanding families and downsizers”.

It added that the plans include 51 affordable homes to include apartments and housing for rent and a range of apartments for discounted sale.

Craig Lynes, land director with Cala Homes East, said: “We are aiming to develop a variety of quality homes, sensitively designed to complement the character of Balerno and we are confident our detailed plans demonstrate this.”

Cala last month said it had set itself the target of growing sales to £1 billion within the next five years after delivering record annual results.

Revenues in the year to June soared 79 per cent to £511.6 million, helping pre-tax profits almost double to £50.9m, compared with £26.8m a year earlier
