Art preview: Hideyuki Katsumata’s USO de HONTOU, Dundee

LUMINOUS catroon strips, paintings and prints by Japanese artist Hideyuki Katsumata are on display at Dundee’s Contemporary Arts for the next month

Dundee plays host to the first-ever UK exhibition of Hideyuki Katsumata’s work as part of the Dundee Contemporary Arts’ celebration of the Discovery Film Festival.

Staples of fantasy-leaning Japanese manga and animation – robots, dragons, and transmogrified bodies – feature heavily in Katsumata’s work alongside UFOs, aliens and mythical creatures. The exhibition’s title, USO de HONTOU (which translates as “that’s also unreal, but it’s also real”), alludes to Katsumata’s playful art.

Katsumata also produces pop videos (also available to view at DCA) illustrates record sleeves for artists. Little Dragon, Rainbow Arabia, Simone White, T-Bone and Mad et Len have all benefited from the Japanese artist’s signature style.

USO de HONTOU is free and runs until Sunday 15 November.
