Annan Athletic 4 - 0 Formartine United: Annan victory

ANNAN ultimately cruised into the semi-finals of the Ramsdens Cup for the second time in three seasons, but it was only after a red card for Formartine Andy Shearer goalkeeper early in
the second half that the League Two side were able to take command.

Scorers: Annan: Love 53 pen; Brannan 73; MacKay 79; Hopkirk 85

Up until the 50th minute, there was nothing between the teams, with Formartine, the ambitious Highland League leaders, well in contention for a last-four berth.

However, the dismissal of Shearer for hauling down Annan striker Kenny MacKay, who had chosen to play despite the heartbreak of his step-brother being killed in America on Friday, ended their hopes of an upset, with the hosts duly turning the screw.

The two sides were evenly matched before the break, with Annan having marginally the better of the few half-chances on offer. However, just five minutes into the second half, all Formartine’s good work came undone. MacKay burst through on goal and as he tried to round Shearer, he was brought to the ground.

The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card and after a lengthy delay while the substitute keeper, John Calder, got himself prepared, Ally Love slammed home from the penalty spot.

After that the roof caved in for the visitors.

Substitute Kieran Brannan drilled home a low angled strike in 73 minutes and MacKay kept his cool six minutes later to lash a shot high into the net after
Calder could only parry his initial effort back into his path.

David Hopkirk finished off the scoring with a tap-in five minutes from the end.
