Probe under way after death in Aberdeen sheltered housing

An investigation was under way yesterday after an elderly woman died when she fell from a window at a sheltered housing ­complex.

The 71-year-old woman was fatally injured after falling out the block of flats at Brimmond Court in Aberdeen.

It is not known what floor the pensioner fell from on Friday afternoon.

The block of flats has 49 flats based on 13 floors and is used as council housing for pensioners.

Paramedics arrived at the scene along with the police shortly after 12:30pm but could do nothing to save the woman.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We were made aware of a sudden death of a woman in the Brimmond Court area of the city at around 12:25pm on Friday.

“Inquiries are at an early stage and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”

Council officers also attended the incident.

Aberdeen City Council’s communities, housing and infrastructure convener Councillor Neil Cooney said it was a tragedy.

He added that it was a particularly sad incident to happen at this time of the year.

He said other residents affected by the incident would be offered support.

“Aberdeen City Council was alerted immediately and attended the incident. My deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of the woman.

“It’s a tragic thing to have happened,” he said.

Mr Cooney added: “I was totally shocked when I was told about this because it’s such a rare occurrence.

“There is never a good time for this to happen but it makes it worse with it being so close to Christmas. There will be counselling available to anyone who requires it following the ­incident.”

City council staff are working with police who are investigating the sudden death.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “We can confirm there was an incident in Brimmond Court on Friday. Staff from Aberdeen City Council and other agencies are helping police with their inquiries.”
